The 7th Seal

I finally got around to watching The Seventh Seal this week. Ingmar Bergman’s film is considered one of the iconic foreign films of the 1950’s. You’ll find it on a lot of the “best of” lists.

Watching it during a serious rain storm only helped add to the film’s ambience. The movie is probably most famous for the opening scene of Death playing a game of chess with a crusading knight on the beach. The movie is a well executed allegory. And it sure does make life in the Middle Ages look absolutely horrible.

Despite being set in the mid 1300’s I still found the comparisons to the religious fundamentalism of our day troubling. Have we really advanced so little in seven centuries?

A good watch. I enjoyed it. Definitely worth being on the best of lists. Not one of my personal favorites. But very good.
