Phone Booth

I was actually kind of relieved to be done with this book. It was a slog. The story of the Mojave Phone Booth is an interesting one. But this self-published book shows the importance of professional editors. This story should have been a long magazine article. If a book, it should have been 100 pages shorter. It just went on and on and beat a quaint cool story to death. There are definitely some interesting parts which I enjoyed. But after awhile it became tedious reading and I was happy to be done with it. Fun story, just overloaded with minutiae.

Arcade Fired

Man, what happened to Arcade Fire? Their first three albums were masterpieces. Yes, I said masterpieces. Brilliant works of indie-pop art. Since their peak with The Suburbs everything else has fallen off a steep cliff. First came Reflecktor which wasn't terrible, just mediocre. Then the pretentious Everything Now followed by "trying to hard to relieve past sounds" We.

This musical collapse was accompanied by a scandal when Win Butler was accused of multiple allegations of sexual misconduct. He claimed that his interactions were consensual but at the very least his repeated infidelity to his wife and fellow band member was a terrible reputational hit. His brother, Will Butler, left the band. Opening acts bailed on their tour. Things seemed to quickly fall apart for the band.

Now, Arcade Fire is trying again. They were featured on the season premiere of the new season of Saturday Night Live. They have released a new album, Pink Elephant.

I really loved this band's music early on. I saw them live in 2011 and they put on a spectacular show. I want to give them the musical benefit of the doubt. I want them to put out great music again.

But Pink Elephant is meh. It is not terrible. Just once again an exercise in mediocrity. And that is tragic when you listen to the greatness of their their opening trilogy of albums.

Last Lunch

Welp! After three years this was my son's last day as a student in my class. I've had him in three different courses over the last three years. Went by too fast. Blink of an eye! This school year we also had the same lunch period so we got to eat lunch together most days. So this was our last regular school lunch together. I feel blessed to have had these times with him.
