Future Classroom

Our high school is building a new building. The old one will soon be torn down and a new gleaming facilty will take its place. Probably be a year or so before I have to relocate. 

I have mixed emotions being that I've been in the same classroom for the past fourteen years. I love my room. It's big, near the teacher's lounge, and has a window that overlooks my parking space. It's quirky and feels like a second home. 

My new room will be smaller as all newly built classrooms are. It won't have carpet and will probably be on a second floor. I'm sure it will be high-tech. But it will probably be sterile in a modernist way. 

So I'm making plans for its decor. I'm going to deck it out like Indiana Jones's classroom in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Old artifacts and big desk. Vintage posters and globes. I need to find an antique flip chalkboard. 

Irony. The new mod Apple Store looking classroom transformed into an old school prep school or Ivy League lecture hall.

I haven't blogged lately. So in order to get the ball rolling again I just decided to post this...this post about nothing in particular. This photo has no correlation to this post. Just posting for posting sake.

We are raising an entire of generation of kids who think Tesla is a car and not a 90's rock band. And apparently the rock band was named after a guy who discovered electricity or something.

Actually saw someone try to defend Brian Williams saying that the difference between Williams and other news anchors is that he confessed his lie. 

Well, he did indeed confess...after he was caught. Does that really count? Because if he hadn't been ratted out by the pilots of the helicopter and Stars and Stripes, do you seriously think he would have confessed?

And they're right...those Fox News Anchors have a lot, I mean A LOT, of confessing to do.

I was listening to sports radio this morning. ESPN's Mike and Mike to be precise. Mike Greenberg was expressing his shock that despite being the most watched TV show in history he couldn't believe that more people didn't watch the Super Bowl last Sunday. Despite pulling a staggering 49 rating Greenberg could not fathom that over 2/3rds of Americans did not watch what he described as a piece of Americana. He implied that it was almost un-American NOT to watch the game.

At that moment I resolved to not watch next year's game.

Of course if the Kansas City Chiefs miraculously make the game I'll go back on that.

But I got caught in the great trap. I watched a game I cared nothing about. I had no rooting interest in the game. I even watched the commercials because I wanted to be able to talk about them the next day. I didn't want to be left out of the conversations the next day. I was glad that I watched the most ridiculous call in the history of football so I could skewer Pete Carroll along with everyone else in America.

I suspect that most of us watch the game because we don't want to be left out of a huge cultural event. So there's pressure to subject yourself to commercial marketing that glorifies materialism.There's pressure to watch a game that causes unbelievable harm to the participants. There were at least three major injuries in the Super Bowl and untold concussive effects on just about everyone on the field. We are peer pressured to support a league that sweeps murder (Ray Lewis), spousal abuse (Ray Rice) and child abuse (Adrian Peterson) under the rug. Those are just three examples.

I'm conflicted. I'm a football fan. I was entertained on Sunday. I keep up with the news of my favorite team. But when I stop and think and look at things from a distance I question why I support such a corrupt system. Caught. We've all been caught in trap. I am a sheep.

So apparently he saw his shadow this morning. Six more weeks of winter. Nice.

I love the Baptists. Some of my closest friends are Baptists. But the SBC position on women is so 19th century. Above is a flyer for a special divided service at a local Baptist church. Seriously? Calling women "chicks?" SMH.

By 1982 measles was pretty much eradicated in the United States. Then, people began to buy into the ridiculous hoax that vaccines were partially responsible for the rise of autism and other spectrum disorders in the United States. As more and more irresponsible parents began to avoid vaccinating their children, measles began to pop up again. Anti-vaxxers were given a platform on The View when Jenny McCarthy was hired as a host a few years back. Even Oprah allowed this former Playmate of the Year spew her nonsense on national television. Do you really want to get your science from a Playboy model?

There has NEVER been a link between vaccines and autism. There is no scientific evidence, in any shape or form, to back up this claim. It's been dismissed by 99% of the world's scientists as rubbish. There is more evidence...much more evidence...that shows that allowing young children to have too much exposure to screen time can lead to spectrum disorders. I wonder how many of these anti-vaxxer parents allow their kids to watch hours of TV or to play on their iPhones without limits?

The only link that has been proven to cause autism is heredity. The only verifiable cause of autism is genetic.

So all these anti-vaxxers are endangering our children's lives. The outbreak at Disneyland, where almost 200 kids have contracted the measles, is now believed to have been caused by one un-vaccinated child. The choices of anti-vaxxers are killing kids. 

Now I know some anti-vaxxers personally. They often have good motivations and care greatly about their kids. But their kids are always sick. I often don't feel comfortable having my child playing with their kids because I know these children have not been protected against common diseases. I also know some anti-vaxxers whose kids are showing signs of autism and spectrum disorder despite the fact that they never have been given a vaccine. I also know anti-vaxxers who allow their kids to watch TV with no restrictions and see their kids playing video games for hours on phones or tablets...despite the evidence that show the dangers of un-regulated screen time.

This is the 21st century. Let's wake up. Give your kids their shots. Kids are dying because of your choice.

We are studying 19th century imperialism in class today. 

The Spring Semester

My last real spring semester at SMU begins tonight. Next spring will be the capstone project semester. After this class I will only have one real class and a capstone left. As slow as I've taken this master's program it still feels like it's flown by. This semester's class is Mesopotamian History: The Art, Architecture, Archaelogy and History of Mesopotamia. You know, Sumerians, Babylonians, Akkadians, Assyrians etc. Had this prof last semester and it was a great class. 

What Happened?

I was a fan of Ben Carson. I read and was inspired by his book and story. He was and is a brilliant surgeon. But somewhere down the line, he lost his mind. It's befuddling to me how someone so intelligent can say things like that students who take AP US History under the new framework will want to sign up for ISIS. He says that he would oppose Obamacare EVEN IF it worked. 

It's a real tragedy. Seeing such a brilliant man, and a former hero of mine, turn out to be such a complete loon. How does that happen? Is he just pandering to an extremist base? Does he really think the GOP establishment will ever let him be on the ticket? Sad to see.

A New Podcast!

A couple of days ago I wrote about some of the podcasts I've been listening to lately. Well a new one has popped up. Mike McHargue, aka, "Science Mike" has begun a new podcast this week called "Ask Science Mike."

McHargue was a Christian who became an atheist who became a Christian again. He writes, blogs and speaks about reconciling faith and science. He is a host of one of my favorite podcasts, The Liturgists. I'm a big fan of Science Mike and was excited to hear that he was starting a Q (question) and R (response) podcast.

This thirty minute podcast features questions sent to Science Mike about a variety of questions regarding doubt, science, faith, etc... It's a fascinating listen.

Unbelievable

FYI: the richest 80 human beings in the world now have the same net worth as the bottom 3.5 BILLION. Of course I'm sure that if those 3.5 billion slackers got off their lazy rear ends and started working they could be rich too. Wow.
