This is as western as I get. It's Western Day at the high school. I inherited this shirt from my wife's grandfather who used to wear these type of shirts when he'd go play country and rockabilly on his Gibson Les Paul at various honky tonks throughout southern Indiana.
Various ramblings and thoughts that lunge themselves into my field of consciousness.

IOS 8
IOS 8 wants me to free up 4.6 gigs of space before I can download. Seriously? Which of these pics do you want me to delete? Sure, I've backed them up on my PC and an external harddrive. But I like to have many of these photos on hand to look at from time to time. I know I can download via iTunes, but last time I tried that I almost accidentally synced 10,000 of my songs to my phone. What a hassle. May have to stick with IOS 7 for awhile.

Goodbyes
Yesterday we said our final goodbyes to my grandmother. She was a true example of how to live out your faith, not with mere words but with action. Some of the flowers from her service were taken to a local nursing home and given to some of the residents. She would have liked that.

Apparently, this is what is showing on all the channels in Scotland today. So if Scotland votes for independence...blame Mel Gibson.

Liturgists Podcast
One of my favorite singer/songwriter/musician/creators, Michael Gungor, recently began recording a podcast. The Liturgists Podcast stated goal is to be a place where science, art and religion collide. The podcast is hosted by Gungor, "Science" Mike McHargue and Lissa Paino. Great stuff. Check it out HERE.

Ban
I will not post his picture here. Adrian Peterson should be banned from playing football. I was once a big fan of his. I am a Sooner fan. But I hope he never shows his face in Norman again.
If there was a video of Peterson beating his child, he would never play again in the NFL.

The Central Triangle
This is a map of a small section of East Dallas south of White Rock Lake. That orange line going east-west along the bottom is I-30. That red circle is the church where I attend. Within that red triangle there are no other churches. That tan square, dead center, is an elementary school where 97% of the students are economically disadvantaged. 44% are labeled at-risk. Looks like we got some people to help, prayers to pray, and things to do.

My Grandmother
My Grandmother passed away very early this morning. This photo was taken a month ago, the last time we saw her. I loved and admired her greatly. She was someone who actually put action to her faith. When she was able, she visited shut-ins, delivered flowers to those in nursing homes and convinced numerous businesses to give her free stuff to donate to those living alone in care facilities.
I will miss her terribly. I love her so much. Goodbye Grandma. You fought the good fight. You deserve some rest.

Visça Catalunya!
In the United States, September 11th is a day of remembrance for those who lost their lives in the terrible terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. That day was horrific and I still shudder at the images from that morning. Selfishly, I don't like to dwell on that day because it was an incredibly depressing moment in our nation's history. However, I don't believe we should ever forget those who lost their lives both as victims and as heroes, sacrificing their lives in the attempt to rescue others.
In Catalunya, September 11th has been a day of remembrance for three centuries. Yesterday marked the 300th anniversary of the Catalan surrender to Spanish forces, ending Catalan independence. Every year, on September 11th, hundreds of thousands of Catalans take to the streets to protest Spanish rule and celebrate their culture. Spanish rule has rarely been kind to Barcelona and Catalunya. The Franco years were particularly harsh.
A slight majority of Catalans favor independence from Spain. As opposed to the Basques, their appeals for independence have rarely turned violent. They have a much greater case for independence than the Scots. Catalunya has a distinct language, cultural tradition, and history of political autonomy. Catalunya was one of the very first regions in Europe to embrace democracy...five hundred years ago!
Catalan independence also makes much more pragmatic sense than for Scotland. Catalunya is the wealthiest region of Spain. Their economy represents over 1/5th of the Spanish economy. They have a major port city on the Mediterranean. They have a vibrant industrial and manufacturing sector. They have a massive service economy. Tourism is also huge in the region. Catalunya is blessed with agricultural and mineral wealth. The Catalan work ethic and spirit of entrepreneurship is legendary. If anything, Spain has always been a drain on Catalunya, holding them back from greater prosperity. Catalunya has propped up Spain for decades.
I have an emotional tie to Barcelona and Catalunya. I visited the region as a senior in college and returned to live there for a year after graduation. That year was one of the most important and formative experiences of my life. I maintain regular contact with my friends there and keep up with the news of the area. I root and support FC Barcelona...which as any Catalan can tell you, is more that just about rooting for a soccer team. FCB represents the cultural heritage of Catalunya.
So yesterday, in solidarity with my friends who paraded in the streets, I put on the Catalan colors. Visça Catalunya!
Last Post Translated.
Here the Catalan translation of my last post:
Visca Catalunya!

Not For Long
I've been a fan of professional football for a long time (Go Chiefs!). But the more I learn about the NFL, the less respect I have for the organization. The NFL deliberately covered up the effects of concussions and CTE. The NFL has been soft on domestic violence and crime for years. The only reason the NFL suspended that Ravens RB (I refuse to put his name on this blog) is because a security video was released that was so horrific they had no choice.
The offices of the NFL remind me of Big Tobacco at best and the Mafia at worst.
I mean, I dunno...part of me really wants to give the NFL up. I've been conflicted for awhile as I've stated HERE. I still haven't been able to give it up. But I won't be surprised that not too far down the road, I'll be done.

The Woodshed
His sabbatical lasted three years.
During those three years he worked on his craft. He would call his buddy and fellow tenor legend John Coltrane to exchange ideas over the phone. They would literally play their newest jazz ideas into the phone receiver and discuss what they heard.
Living in a cramped Manhattan flat with no place to practice, Rollins would go to the Williamsburg Bridge and practice and play for twelve to fifteen hours a day. I can only imagine the passersby thinking he was just some weird street performer who didn't ask for money, when in actuality they were hearing one of the legends of 1950's hard bop jazz honing his craft.
Sonny Rollins re-emerged in 1962 ready to record again. The result was this album, The Bridge. The next several years proved that Rollins not only still had it but had remarkably found new ground to explore.
Three years man. We always got things to work on.

Ridin'
A couple of weeks ago we took the Little Man to White Rock Lake in Dallas. We were going to have him ride his bike just a couple of miles, have a picnic then turn back.
But he wanted to keep going. And going. He ended up riding the entire nine mile trail around the lake. And he still had energy left to burn.

Last Summer Recap
School has started so I need to get the last bit of summer out of the way. Since we were in Ohio visiting friends we decided to head on up to Niagara Falls since the falls were only five hours away. They were spectacular. We did all the usual stuff: rode the Maid of the Mist, explored the Cave of the Winds and tooled around the Niagara Falls State Park. It was a nice, relaxing visit.

Summer Recap Part Two
This summer we decided to finally pay a visit to one of Kimberly's high school friends who lives in Ohio. So we drove up to Circleville, OH and spent a couple of nights with Deb and her family. It was a nice visit, our first ever to Ohio. We went to the Pickaway County Fair, tooled around Circleville and had a very nice time.
One night we drove thirty miles north to Columbus to catch a Crew game. They just happened to be playing our FC Dallas. I had wanted to see Crew Stadium which is kind of legendary in American soccer circles since it was the first stadium build specifically for soccer. Lamar Hunt, the Crew's owner at the time, was taking quite a risk. But now almost every MLS side boasts their own grounds.
We had great seats but had to take cover a few minutes before the game started due to a storm that rolled in. We waited for an hour before being told the game was cancelled. We later found out the match was cancelled because an off-duty fireman was struck by lightning in the parking lot moments before game time. He survived. Bummed that we didn't see a game but glad everyone was okay. Crew Stadium is a cool venue and they treated us well despite our FC Dallas gear.
We enjoyed our brief visit to Ohio before heading out to New York.

Summer Recap Part One
It's been a great summer so far and I haven't blogged much in the past month. So, not that you care, I'll recap in bits and pieces.
The AP Reading in Salt Lake went well. Always good to see the Wolfpack (pictured above at a typical dinner moment). After seven years these guys have become some of my closest friends. I've made some other great friends over the years including my Wolf Gang (an offshoot of the pack, pictured below).

Soccer Night
It was a beautiful night for soccer last night at Toyota Stadium. 20,000 of us were treated to temps in the mid-seventies. Unfortunately the match against Chivas ended in a tie but that's better than a loss. Great place to watch a game.

The Last Days...
The Last Day of the FSA Dynamo. Last Saturday the league had trophy presentation ceremonies for each age group. It was a bittersweet day knowing that the Dynamo are breaking up. Four of the members are going all in for Academy soccer and leaving the Rec league altogether. The coach is giving up the reins since his son is one of those moving on. JDW wasn't really interested in Academy at this point. I was asked to consider coaching but my son wants to give baseball a shot in the fall. Most likely the other boys will thrown into the league draft and scattered to new teams.
My son was one of three left from the original Dynamo. They played six seasons together (not including indoor seasons). That's three years. We had a great coach and great parent support. Players transferred to our team because of the Dynamo's reputation...not for winning...but for being a good, supportive team. I will miss those Saturdays on the soccer field.
But we are giving baseball a shot. My son's been dying to try it. We've been playing catch almost every night the past week. And my son says if he doesn't like baseball he'll go back to soccer. Being a baseball fan and having played as a kid I'm excited as well. But still, just a little sad about moving on from the Dynamo.
Go Go Dynamo!

The House of New Worship
The great Mughal Emperor Akbar, who ruled India in the late 16th century, had a temple built in his great capital Fatephur Sikri called the House of New Worship. The House of New Worship was a place where ideas could be debated without fear. Philosophers and religious leaders could argue and attack each others ideas and even critique the rule of the all powerful emperor in the safety of the House of New Worship. Missionaries from western Europe could debate the merits of Christianity, monks from Cathay (China) could espouse the virtues of Buddhism and so on and so forth.
But the House of New Worship was not a permanent structure. It was a gigantic tent. It was a grand and beautiful tent, but a tent nonetheless. Akbar believed that all ideas are impermanent. He believed that ideas wash up on the shore like great tides that possess great strength and fury and then ebb and recede with the passing of time. Akbar even knew the impermanent nature of the mighty Mughal Dynasty. He therefore decreed that a house for ideas should be as impermanent as ideas themselves.

Beasts
Back in January I wrote about what I was reading. Since January I've read some excellent books, all of which I recommend. Here's what I've read since January:
The Circle by Dave Eggers
Teach Like a Pirate by Dave Burgess
To End All Wars by Adam Hochschild
Everything Must Change by Brian D. McClaren
In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson
If I get around to it, I'll try to write some brief thoughts on each of the above titles. Last night I finished In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson. It was one of those "wow" books. When I put it down after reading the last page, that was my reaction. I read a lot of books and many of them are great. But there are very few "wow" books. I put Beasts down and just had to sit and reflect for a few minutes.
Erik Larson is an amazing writer, historian and journalist. I first encountered his work in Devil in the White City. Devil in the White City, about the Chicago's World's Fair, was such a great work that when I saw he had written a book about Nazi Germany I had to give it a look.
"Garden of beasts" is the literal translation of the great park in central Berlin called the Tiergarten. It was around this central park like district of Berlin where you found the Reichstag, many embassies and German government buildings. The book follows the story of the American ambassador and his family stationed in Berlin in 1934, months after Hitler was named chancellor.
The narrative traces the early rise of Hitler's government and the personal stories of the ambassador and his family. The book reads like a novel. The twenty-eight year old daughter of the American ambassador had numerous affairs with high ranking Nazis, including the head of the Gestapo. She also had a long relationship with the head Soviet NKVD (predecessor to the KGB) agent in Berlin. Larson's research is extremely thorough and unsettling.
Ambassador Christopher Dodd did everything he could to warn the United States of the dangers of Hitler's rise. He was stymied by the state department who was only interested in not offending Germany so the Nazis would not be inclined to default on their post World War I debts. The book makes it clear that Hitler could have easily been destabilized and overthrown with minimal effort if the United States and Western Europe had taken early action. Hitler was very weak and his grip on power tenuous in the first two or three years of his reign.
The book has an obviously tragic aspect knowing how terrible things would become in Europe due to the inaction of the appeasers and the psychotic world view of Hitler's regime. I was always taught that America didn't really know what Hitler was up to at the beginning of his reich and that's why we didn't speak up earlier. Turns out, our nation knew full well how Hitler felt about Jews. Hitler didn't try to hide his world view. In 1934, a mock trial of Hitler was held in Madison Square Garden in New York. 20,000 people packed the arena. Another one was planned for Chicago. Under Nazi pressure, the United States government encouraged the Chicago mock trial to be cancelled. The U.S. wanted Germany to pay back their loans.
The book is a cautionary tale. It's an excellent history about a strange and tumultuous time before the great tragedy of World War II. It's a story we don't often hear in the United States. It's also a sobering story of appeasement, weird love triangles and tragic losses of opportunity. Great read.

Back to the Grand
Just got confirmation that I have been assigned The Grand America Hotel again this year for my lodging during the AP World History Exam grading in Salt Lake City. The AP World History readers (they call us readers, since we read essays) are booked into one of two hotels, The Grand America and the Little America.
Now don't get me wrong, The Little America is a very nice hotel. It's across the street from the Grand and is owned by the same company. It's quite a place. It's a four diamond hotel.
But it's no Grand America.
The Grand America Hotel is a Taj Mahal of a hotel. It possesses the visage of a majestic 19th century resort. But it was actually built in the late 1990's for the 2002 Winter Olympics. It is spectacular in every way, by far the nicest hotel in Salt Lake. It is actually a Five Diamond hotel...not just five stars...diamonds. Michelin Diamonds.
So since they moved the AP reading to Salt Lake three years ago I have been blessed to have been assigned residency in the Grand America. I'm a humble member of the upper lower middle class (as Orwell described it). I don't have many opportunities to spend time in a place like the Grand America. So yes, when I received the annual email with the living arrangements, I was quite happy.
